Marist statistics show that around 22 percent of the current freshmen class comes from underrepresented backgrounds making the Class of 2020 the most diverse class Marist has ever had. “We want to be a campus where not only the atmosphere is good, but that the numbers more accurately reflect what our society is like in terms of numbers.” ![]() ![]() “It’s not inappropriate to focus significantly on race and ethnicity,” said David Yellen, newly elected president of Marist. While some look at diversity as a difference in socio-economic status, experiences, gender, age and background others simply see it as a matter of race, color and ethnicity. The Values Statement reads, “We are a diverse community united by a shared commitment to the free exchange of ideas, consideration of the opinions of others, and civility in all our interactions.”Īdditionally, the Marist Center for Multicultural Affairs says, “Our mission is to engage the Marist community in events and activities that highlight diversity and multiculturalism creating a climate of access, equity and inclusion that celebrates the rich contributions of all cultures, and empowers students to achieve academic success by preparing them to become engaged global citizens.”Īlthough Marist has a strong sense of community, Geoffrey Brackett, Executive Vice President of Marist, said, “As great as any community is, there is always room for improvement.”Īs of 2015, the Marist population was 17 percent diverse.The student body demographics showed that 78.9 percent of Marist undergraduate students were white, 8.9 percent were Hispanic/Latino and 3.2 percent were Black or African American. The Marist sense of community is based on the belief that it will become a better institution through the inclusion and involvement of faculty, staff, students and alumni. Marist College prides itself as an inclusive community with “diverse backgrounds, perspectives and contributions,” but many students still feel a sense of misrepresentation.īased on the ideals and traditions of the Marist Brothers, the college continues to value “excellence in education, a sense of community and a commitment to service.” Through their commitment to education, the Marist Values Statement says, “Students explore diverse cultures through coursework, extracurricular programs, international study, internships and service opportunities.” ![]() “They need to be a part of the conversation.” Igniting a social change has become a difficult task for students as not enough attention has been placed on these pressing issues. “The administration lets students do what they want, but doesn’t ask why,” said Darriel McBride, senior student activist. The Marist administration has allowed its students to voice their opinions and protest controversial issues including oppression of blacks, LGBT rights and voter suppression however, students feel that the administration has done little to initiate change.
